QUASSIA (Picrasma amara)

DESCRIPTION: Quassia is known as the 'great healer of the sick'. It contains calcium, sodium and potassium. In small doses it speeds recovery. It can also help destroy the taste of a bad drink. It is known as one of the best remedies of noxious substances in the GI tract. Has been used for measles, diarrhea, fever, and lice. Quassia is an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-fertility, anti-tumor, anti-leukemic, and insecticidal.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS: Several recent studies of topical quassia tincture for head lice have been reported. Quassia has been used as an insecticide and as a natural insect repellant.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS: Quassia wood has been used as a bitter tonic, with a typical oral dose of 500 mg. No studies have been performed to support this dose and no contraindications reported. If taken in excess it is an emetic, irritant, depressant and produces nausea.
