WHAT KIND OF LEADER ARE YOU?
'Siyo or Osiyo [Hello in Cherokee]

After watching Oprah's post Academy Award show yesterday with the best actress (Sandra Bullock), best actor (Jeff Bridges), best supporting actress (Mo'Nique) and best supporting actor (Christoph Waltz), I knew immediately what I needed to write about today. During that show, I was reminded of one of the biggest lessons of my Life. This lesson has served me both personally and professionally.
I'm quoting the following verbatim between Sandra and Oprah.
Referring to Jesse James (Sandra Bullock's husband) Oprah says to Sandra, "And obviously through this whole process he's been there for you. I've seen him on the red carpets looking uncomfortable in his tuxedo."
Sandra replies, "That's anybody. I'm uncomfortable! But this is a man who works 12 hours a day, manual labor, it's him who has to create. If he stops, 80 people stop working and if he has one day that's missed, a lot of things fall apart and so for him to take the time to do that is huge . . ya' know, I have to pull him out of bed after his body's broke and say, "Can you try on the Dolce suit?"
I thought, oh no no no, that is not how it is supposed to be. Don't get me wrong, I just adore Jesse James and love his line of work clothes. He is a man's man, full of testosterone, opinion, grit, tattoo's and muscle. And Sandra, well she's just fantastic!!! She probably just meant that he is an insane workaholic because I really doubt his business falls apart when he's not there. Jesse James is smart, intense and probably a really great leader. When Jesse James did the Celebrity Apprentice, last year was it, I'm sure his business went on . . business as usual. Still, this brought me back to my lesson several years ago while on a vacation in Grand Cayman with my former long term relationship. This man was an M.D. (a Leo) and a very very hard worker who spent on average between 12 - 16 hours a day at the hospital. Twelve hours a day, 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM would have been a fantasy. He was not just a hospital staff doctor, he had an entire group of doctors who worked for his Company. He employed doctors and supplied them to several hospitals in Missouri and Illinois. This man rarely took a day off but when he did . . he was off . . and I mean off!
One day while snorkeling in Grand Cayman, I remember looking at him from below the water as he moved slowly in different directions. He was clearly at peace without a worry in the world. I thought, "Wow, he looks so different without his pager on his hip." After snorkeling we sat on the beach and talked. Not only was he a business owner but so was I because I had a healthcare clinic that was open 12 hours a day, only I took weekends off.
I asked him, "Have you called in and checked on things?"
He said,"No."
Completely surprised I asked, "REALLY, how come?"
He said, "If everything falls apart when I'm gone, then I wouldn't be a very good leader, now would I? The business shouldn't go down the toilet because I'm not there for a day or a week. If I'm a good leader then there is no reason why anyone should call or why those I've left in charge can't make a decision without me. I guess we'll see how good a leader I am when we get back."
Wondering about my own leadership abilities I said, "Do you think I should call in and check on the clinic?"
He smiled and said, "I don't know, should you?"
I said, "I guess we'll see what kind of leader I am when we get back."
Until then, as we say in Cherokee . . .
